At Kwendalo, nestled in the heart of Plettenberg Bay, the rhythm of nature informs everything we do—from the slow growing of our vegetables to the considered pace of healing in our wellness centre. This July, our rhythms sync once more with the majestic return of Southern Right and Humpback whales to the waters just beyond our hills and gardens.
There’s something profoundly humbling about watching these gentle giants breach the surface of the ocean—graceful, powerful, present. Their migration is not only a visual spectacle, but a visceral reminder of the interconnectedness of life, of ecosystems that span continents and oceans, and of the value of slowing down to notice.
Just as Kwendalo nurtures holistic wellbeing through balance across body, mind, and spirit, these whales remind us of the importance of harmony with the natural world. Their annual visit speaks to the health of our marine environment—an echo of the same principle we live by: what we nourish, flourishes.
To honour their arrival, Plettenberg Bay hosts the vibrant Plett Ocean Festival. The festival, like our own seasonal rhythms, is a time to learn, connect, and celebrate. Events like the Marine Science Symposium mirror our mission at the Kwendalo Institute: to foster education that is alive, regenerative, and rooted in place. For those curious minds, the festival provides a rare opportunity to dive into the latest oceanic research, while others may simply find joy in walking the shores, catching a tail flick or a full breach at sunset.
We invite our community and guests to experience this season of wonder through Kwendalo’s own offerings. Begin your mornings with meditation on Fynbos Hill, where the distant exhalation of a whale may accompany your breath. Nourish yourself with a meal at the Green Café, crafted from produce grown on the very land that sustains us. Join one of our wellness retreats to realign your senses with the ocean’s natural rhythm—calm, powerful, and ever in motion.
The whales have arrived. Their presence calls us home—not just to a place, but to a state of being. A place where we are present. A place where we are well.
Welcome to the season of the whales. Welcome to Kwendalo.
