Kwendalo Conversations – 18 April 2024

The Life of Lycan: Loving the Little Things

Vina Zaayman (aka Lycan) has become well-known to local nature lovers through her curation of the popular Plett Nature Whatsapp group. Her infectious enthusiasm for the little, and often unnoticed, wildlife – especially insects and their life cycles – has organically inspired many others on the group to take an interest in the creatures in their garden. Vinia provides a delightful example of an active ‘citizen scientist’ and how a combination of passion and thirst for knowledge contributes to both scientific endeavours and community engagement.

In this Kwendalo Conversation, we intend to delve into where Vinia’s fascination for insects and spiders began, how she found it possible to learn and remember their names, and what inspires her to share her acquired knowledge. We will also touch on the ecological importance of insects, their plight and, hopefully, experience some “show ‘n tell” through photos and live exhibits.

This should be fun. Hope you can join us!
